cant turn off without losing details

i have never had a problem with dc before but today i opened it up as i had closed it earlier and it had gone back to the part where i had to re-enter all my details as if i had only just started it. i tried uninstalling and downloading again but it does the same after turning off. i did delete the shortcut icons that appear on the desktop(file list folder, log etc) but i did this before without it causing problems.
the only new/recent things i have done is create a backup to a secure zone on my hdd with acronis true image 10 but i can't see this being a problem.
any ideas what this could be?
